You probably shouldn't do that unless you have a really good reason. I just tried performing git push -u origin master on the same directory from my non-root login shell, and got the same error. Apple also has a similar feature called iCloud Keychain that syncs usernames, passwords, credit-card numbers and other information for sites and services between Macs running OS X and mobile devices using iOS. You may not have realized it at the time, but you created this login password keychain when you first went through the assistant programs that opened automatically and guided you through the setting up your new Mac for the first time.
The information you store in the keychain is encrypted and locked with its own password — which is usually the same password you use to log into your computer.
